Service done
« on: October 16, 2017, 10:35:24 AM »
Managed to get around to doing a service on my daughters '09 A500. Total cost about 70. NGK plugs, Shell Helix oil, oil filter, air filter and pollen filter. All went well, just a bit of a pig getting the oil filter out, it's a bit tight in there. And the pollen filter's a bit awkward as well. But probably saved her about 250 at a dealer? Happy with that.

Any reason why you went with Helix over Petronas Selenia Abarth oil?

I've used Selenia before, but have googled many times about alternatives. Some people say always use Selenia, others say a good quality 5w40 fully synthetic is just as good. Many options available,so I opted for Shell Helix. Obviously cost is also a consideration, and with Selenia at ~22/2 litres x 2 it is comparatively expensive. You can also get some good discounts with ECP on oils.

A good 5W40 (EDIT - This is incorrect, I second guessed myself here but Abarth recommend 10W) is defiantly all good, was just curious as to why you'd gone with something else.

5w40 is the wrong grade anyway for a 2009 500... You should be running 10w50

Yes 5w40 will do a job, however the 10w50 grade is produced to deal with higher engine temps, which our engines have. I'm not mentioning it to start a big online debate, 5w40 will probably be fine however with higher mileages than a new model and older engines the thicker grade will probably be a better option anyway.

Actually you're right, Selenia is SAE 10W-50 and in my head when I wrote my reply the Abarth was 5W but you're totally right.

Ah thats okay  :) I mean there's not a massive difference in terms of spec, but I just think if Abarth/Fiat recommend the 10w50 then they do so for a reason... It's not a money making plan as although not a common grade, theres still plenty of other options from other oil brands, but it's similar to the motorsport/high performance spec oils and our engines are fairly highly tuned 1.4's so makes sense to use a top spec oil especially as it doesn't hold all that much so it's hardly a big expense.  8)

Don't want to worry you but Shell is wrong and the manual and Abarth are pretty clear that the oil should be 10W and Selenia is 10W. It seemed wrong in my head when you said 5W but I second guessed myself and just assumed I'd got my cars mixed up.

oVerboost is correct though. Maybe someone else can reply if they've used 5W before but I've always stuck with 10W.

A good quality 10W50 fully syn then? If I drain the oil out, I wouldn't need to change the filter again?

For what that costs you can buy the genuine Abarth oil (20 per tin but you only need 1.5 tins leaving a litre for top ups or to go towards your next oil change).

That's true. I probably have half a tin from the previous oil change. I'll have to check
